MARADMIN 162/10 - Safeguarding Personally Identifiable Information

Scope

MARADMIN 162/10 sets requirements for safeguarding Personally Identifiable Information (PII) across the Marine Corps. The MARADMIN reinforces the Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. Section 552a) and SECNAVINST 5211.5 requirements. Misuse or unauthorized disclosure of PII results in civil and criminal penalties. Applicability is the Marine Corps Total Force.

Audience

• Marines and civilians handling PII. Apply Privacy Act handling rules.
• Commanders. Track unit PII posture and respond to PII breach reports.
• S-1 staff and admin. Apply PII protection during OMPF, MCTFS, and Marine Online transactions.

Action items

1. Track PII handling under SECNAVINST 5211.5.
2. Report PII breaches through the chain of command.
3. Apply encryption to PII transmissions.
