Role and responsibility

The medical board at the medical treatment facility (MTF) generates the LIMDU recommendation per MCO 1900.16MCO 1900.16 Chapter 8 paragraph 8104 (Limited Duty Overview). The MTF commander signs the LIMDU determination per paragraph 8110 (Limited Duty Responsibilities). The unit commander approves the LIMDU duty status and applies the duty restrictions. The S-1 chief tracks the LIMDU period and the re-evaluation gate per paragraph 8105. The S-1 officer signs by direction on the LIMDU transaction routing. The IPAC outbound counselor cuts the duty status transaction in MCTFS through UD-MIPS per MCTFSPRIUMMCTFSPRIUM.

Per paragraph 8105 (Limited Duty Policy), standard LIMDU runs 6 months. The MTF recommends a 2-month medical extension when warranted per paragraph 8111. LIMDU does not normally exceed 8 months total without DES referral.

Processing workflow

1. Receive the MTF LIMDU board recommendation. The MTF medical board generates the recommendation with the medical scope, the expected recovery time, and the recommended duty restrictions.
2. Validate the LIMDU period. Per MCO 1900.16MCO 1900.16 Chapter 8 paragraph 8105 (Limited Duty Policy), standard LIMDU runs 6 months. Per paragraph 8111, the MTF recommends a 2-month medical extension when warranted. LIMDU does not normally exceed 8 months total.
3. Route through the MTF commander. Per paragraph 8104 (Limited Duty Overview), the MTF commander signs the LIMDU determination.
4. Unit commander approves. The unit commander approves the LIMDU duty status and applies the duty restrictions per the medical recommendation.
5. Cut the LIMDU duty status transaction. Per Appendix E (Automated Processing under MCTFS) and MCTFSPRIUMMCTFSPRIUM, the IPAC cuts the LIMDU transaction in UD-MIPS.
6. Document on Page 11. Per MCO P1070.12KMCO P1070.12K Chapter 6, cut a Page 11 documenting the LIMDU period, the medical scope, the duty restrictions, and the re-evaluation gate.
7. Track the LIMDU re-evaluation gate. Per paragraph 8110 (Limited Duty Responsibilities), the unit IPAC and the S-1 chief monitor the 6-month re-evaluation appointment cycle.
8. Coordinate referral to DES. Per Chapter 8 Section 2 paragraphs 8201-8208 and DODI 1332.18, the MTF refers to the Disability Evaluation System when the medical condition warrants PEB review.
9. Process LIMDU extension. Per paragraph 8111 (Medical Extension), the MTF commander recommends extension within the defined limit. The unit commander approves within the policy.
10. Close LIMDU. On fit-for-full-duty return, the unit closes the LIMDU duty status in MCTFS. On DES referral, the LIMDU status transitions per Section 2.

Common pitfalls

Decision points
