Role and responsibility

The MTF medical officer recommends the medical extension per MCO 1900.16MCO 1900.16 Chapter 8 paragraph 8111 (Medical Extension) when the Marine's recovery requires additional time beyond the standard 6-month LIMDU period per paragraph 8105. The MTF commander signs the medical extension determination per paragraph 8110 (Limited Duty Responsibilities). The unit commander approves the extension within the policy bounds. The S-1 chief tracks the extension period and the extended re-evaluation gate. The S-1 officer signs by direction on the routing of the extension transaction. The IPAC outbound counselor cuts the updated LIMDU transaction in MCTFS through UD-MIPS per MCTFSPRIUMMCTFSPRIUM.

Processing workflow

1. Receive the MTF medical extension recommendation. The MTF medical officer recommends the extension based on the re-evaluation.
2. Validate the extension request. Per MCO 1900.16MCO 1900.16 Chapter 8 paragraph 8111 (Medical Extension), the extension covers a 2-month period. Total LIMDU including the extension does not normally exceed 8 months.
3. Confirm total LIMDU period. Per Chapter 8 paragraph 8105 (Limited Duty Policy) and paragraph 8111, the total period (initial LIMDU plus extension) stays at or below 8 months without DES referral.
4. MTF commander signs the medical extension determination. Per Chapter 8 paragraph 8110, the MTF commander signs.
5. Unit commander approves. The unit commander approves within the policy. The S-1 documents the approval on Page 11.
6. Cut updated LIMDU duty status transaction. Per Appendix E and MCTFSPRIUM, the IPAC cuts the updated duty status transaction in UD-MIPS reflecting the extended period.
7. Document on Page 11. Per MCO P1070.12KMCO P1070.12K Chapter 6, cut a Page 11 documenting the medical extension, the new period, the medical scope, and the extended re-evaluation gate.
8. Schedule the extended re-evaluation gate. Per Chapter 8 paragraph 8110, the unit and the IPAC track the extended appointment.
9. Refer to DES on continued condition. Per Chapter 8 Section 2 paragraphs 8201-8208 and DODI 1332.18, the MTF refers to the Disability Evaluation System when the medical condition continues past the extension and warrants PEB review.
10. Close extension. On fit-for-full-duty return, the unit closes the LIMDU status in MCTFS. On DES referral, the LIMDU status transitions per Section 2.
