OMPF Award Verification
An approved award not in OMPF is an award the system did not see. Verify on Marine Online within 60 days of the ceremony. Catch entry errors before they hit the next promotion board.
Leader Steps
- Pull each Marine's OMPF and Awards Branch record on Marine Online
- Verify every approved award appears with correct date and citation
- Identify entry errors, missing awards, and citation typos
- Submit corrections through S-1 to MMPB-3 as needed
- Re-verify after correction routing completes
Why Verification Is Not Optional
An approved award sits in three places after the ceremony.
- The Marine's hands. The citation paper.
- The unit's records. Section copy and S-1 copy.
- OMPF on Marine Online. The system of record.
The first two carry weight at the unit. The third is what promotion boards, separation processing, and career management see. An award not in OMPF is an award the Corps did not record.
The 60-Day Verification Window
After the ceremony.
- 30 days. S-1 has typically routed the award documentation to OMPF.
- 60 days. Most awards land in the OMPF view on Marine Online.
- 90 days. Outliers should have cleared. Anything missing past 90 days is a real records gap.
Schedule the section verification at the 60-day mark for every awarded Marine.
What to Check on Marine Online
For each award, verify:
- Award name matches the approved tier.
- Approval date matches the citation date.
- Citation language matches the approved citation.
- Combat designation if applicable. Combat V, gold star, silver star device.
- Subsequent awards display correctly. Stars on existing ribbons rather than duplicate ribbons.
The Marine Online display drives every system downstream. A typo here propagates everywhere.
Common Entry Errors
| Error | Source | Fix Path |
|---|---|---|
| Award missing entirely | Routing gap between approval and OMPF entry | S-1 reopens the routing |
| Wrong tier shown | Entry error at MMPB-3 or S-1 | Correction request through S-1 to MMPB-3 |
| Wrong date | Data entry error | Correction request |
| Wrong citation language | Citation routing or transcription error | Provide the approved citation, request reconciliation |
| Subsequent award shown as duplicate ribbon | Star device entry error | Correction request specifying the star |
| Foreign award shown without acceptance authorization | Premature entry | Coordinate with S-1 on authorization status |
Correction Routing
Corrections route through S-1 to the Awards Branch (MMPB-3) at HQMC.
- Document the discrepancy with screenshots or printouts.
- Provide the source documentation. Approved citation, signed routing sheet.
- Submit the correction request through S-1.
- Track to closure with re-verification.
A correction request submitted without source documentation gets returned. Pull the source first.
Pre-Promotion Board Verification
Six months before any Marine's promotion board, run a full awards audit.
- Pull all approved awards from unit records.
- Cross-check against Marine Online OMPF.
- Cross-check against the Awards Branch view if accessible.
- Resolve every gap or error.
The board reviews what is in the records, not what the unit knows. A Marine with three NAMs in unit records and one NAM on OMPF goes to the board with one NAM.
The Marine Owns Self-Verification Too
Coach the Marine to verify their own OMPF on Marine Online during counseling sessions.
- Marine pulls OMPF view.
- Walks through the awards section.
- Identifies any gaps or errors.
- Reports findings to you.
Two sets of eyes catch what one misses. The Marine has the most personal stake in accuracy.
When Records Sit Outside the Standard Window
SECNAV M-1650.1SECNAV M-1650.1 Chapter 8 covers awards beyond time limits, veteran awards issues, and corrections that surface after the standard processing window. SECNAV M-1650.1 Ch 8 A pre-board cleanup discovering an award gap from years prior routes through Chapter 8 procedures. Coordinate with S-1 on the Beyond the Limits package requirements when the gap predates the unit's records.
Long-Term Records Hygiene
Awards records can become invalid through:
- Conversion errors during system migrations.
- Citation language updates that did not propagate.
- Awards Branch backlog during high-volume periods.
- Unit administrative turnover losing the local copy.
Build the verification check into your section's annual records cadence.
Common Verification Failures
- Verification skipped after the ceremony. Marine arrives at next unit with records gap.
- Section keeps the only copy of the citation. Section turns over. Citation lost.
- Marine assumes the award is in OMPF without checking.
- Correction request submitted without source documentation. Returns.
- Pre-board audit deferred. Board sees the gap during scoring.
Where to Go Next

- Records verification topic covers section-wide records audit cadence beyond awards.
