Bonus Recoupment Policy
Per MARADMIN 023/26MARADMIN 023/26 paragraph 8.
When Recoupment Applies
Marines who receive an SRB payment are required to serve in a billet requiring the PMOS or skill for which they received the bonus payment, unless they.
- Serve in an authorized out-of-skill assignment.
- Have a waiver granted by the Secretary of the Navy.
Failure to complete this requirement may result in recoupment of the unearned portion of the Marine's reenlistment bonus.
Officer Program Considerations
Marines awaiting officer program board results should request an extension of their current contract VICE reenlistment. Marines who reenlist or extend SOLELY to gain sufficient obligated service to participate in a program leading to a commissioned or warrant officer status are NOT entitled to an SRB.
Marines Who Reenlist Then Apply for Officer Program
Marines who re-enlist in their PMOS or skill then subsequently apply to and are accepted into a program that will change their PMOS or skill or lead to a commission, MAY NOT be subject to recoupment of SRB.
Marines Who Apply for Officer Program Then Reenlist
Marines who apply for a program which will change their PMOS or lead to a commission, then subsequently reenlist within their PMOS will not normally be considered eligible for an SRB and are subject to recoupment of the unearned portion of any SRB payment received.
Exceptions to Repayment
Per 10 USC 37310 USC 373 and DOD FMR Volume 7ADOD FMR Volume 7A Chapter 9. Repayment of unearned bonus amounts shall NOT be required for Marines who.
- Die.
- Are retired or separated with a combat-related disability.
FY27 SRB Payment Methodology Change
Per MARADMIN 023/26MARADMIN 023/26 paragraph 9.
What Changed
The Marine Corps is updating the SRB payment methodology to enhance career stability and retention efforts. Aligns with the Return on Investment talent management initiative.
What This Allows
Marines will have the opportunity to reenlist AHEAD OF their retention cohort year, securing reenlistment incentives, duty station assignments, and career progression opportunities WITHOUT delay.
When Payment Is Made
SRB payments will be made in the FY of their ECC rather than at the time of reenlistment.
Why This Matters
Allows Marines to lock in benefits early while ensuring financial incentives are tied to the reenlistment.
Safety Mechanism
In the unlikely event a Marine does not receive their bonus payment within their designated retention FY, they will have the option to submit for separation within 90 days of concluding FY.

Common Mistakes
Mistake 1. Misunderstanding Zone Boundaries
Zones overlap on specific anniversary dates. Verify exact eligibility with Career Counselor.
Mistake 2. Choosing Wrong Kicker
Marines may be eligible for multiple kickers but can receive only one. Choose strategically.
Mistake 3. Insufficient Obligated Service
Kickers require 60 months. Less obligated service forfeits the kicker.
Mistake 4. Not Considering Recoupment
Marines who fail to fulfill the obligated service may face recoupment.
Mistake 5. Reenlisting Solely for Officer Program
Per MARADMIN 023/26MARADMIN 023/26 paragraph 8.b. Marines who reenlist or extend SOLELY to gain OS for an officer program are NOT entitled to SRB.
Mistake 6. Misunderstanding Career Cap
The $360,000 career cap is cumulative across the Marine's career. Plan accordingly.
