EXTENSIONS are a short-term retention tool that adjusts your current enlistment WITHOUT requiring a full reenlistment contract. Per MCO 1040.31MCO 1040.31, three categories apply. CONVENIENCE OF GOVERNMENT for service needs (training, deployment, end strength). PERSONAL CONVENIENCE for Marine-driven needs (PCS timing, education, family). OPERATIONAL for deployment or specific mission completion. Local Command Authority (LCA) extensions cover short windows tied to PCS, deployment, or training. Maximum cumulative extension is 47 months. NAVMC 11537NAVMC 11537 RELM is the standard submission worksheet. Career Counselor is the primary point of contact. Extensions do NOT pay a reenlistment bonus. Per MCO 1040.31MCO 1040.31.

What An Extension Is
An EXTENSION lengthens your current enlistment contract by a specified number of months. It does NOT create a new contract. It does NOT trigger a reenlistment bonus. It does NOT reset your contract clock.
Extension vs Reenlistment
Two different tools. Different uses. Different implications.
- Extension. Adds months to your CURRENT contract. No new obligation beyond extension term. No bonus. Used for short, specific needs.
- Reenlistment. Creates a NEW contract. New obligation period (typically 4 to 6 years). Bonus eligible if MOS qualifies. Used for long-term retention.
Career Counselor recommends the right tool based on your situation.
The Three Extension Types
Per MCO 1040.31MCO 1040.31, extensions fall into three categories.
Convenience of Government (COG) Extensions
The Marine Corps initiates COG extensions to meet service needs.
- Training pipeline alignment. Extending you to complete a school or course before EAS.
- Deployment requirements. Keeping you with your unit through deployment.
- End strength management. Bridging gaps in MOS coverage.
- Operational requirements. Mission-specific needs that require continued service.
COG extensions are command-driven, not Marine-driven.
Personal Convenience (PC) Extensions
The Marine requests PC extensions to meet personal needs.
- PCS timing. Extending to align with desired PCS window or family needs.
- Education completion. Finishing degree, certification, or military school.
- Family circumstances. Aligning EAS with spouse's separation, child's school year, or family medical needs.
- Career planning. Bridging time to make a more informed reenlistment decision.
PC extensions are Marine-driven, with command approval.
Operational Extensions
Operational extensions support deployment or specific mission completion.
- Deployment to combat or named operation. Marine extends to complete deployment cycle.
- High-priority operational tasking. Specific mission requires continued service.
- Unit cohesion. Keeping critical skills with deploying unit.
Operational extensions are typically requested by the unit and approved at higher levels.
Local Command Authority (LCA) Extensions
LCA extensions are short-window extensions approved at the local command level. The commanding officer holds authority for limited extension windows tied to specific operational, training, or PCS needs.
LCA Extension Limits
Per MCO 1040.31MCO 1040.31 and current MARADMIN guidance.
- Up to 11 months for specific operational, training, or PCS alignment needs.
- Approved at local command level (typically O-5 commanding officer).
- Documented via NAVMC 11537NAVMC 11537 RELM with command endorsement.
- Subject to MOS health and end strength considerations.
Extensions beyond LCA authority require higher headquarters approval.
Higher Authority Extensions
For extensions beyond LCA limits.
- Beyond 11 months. Requires HQMC approval through Career Counselor and chain of command.
- Approaching 47-month cap. Requires MMEA review.
- Special program ties. ECDP, EDSI, or other program enrollments may have specific extension provisions.
The 47-Month Cumulative Cap
The cumulative extension cap is 47 MONTHS across all extensions on a single enlistment contract. This is a hard cap.
What Counts Toward The Cap
- All COG extensions on this contract.
- All PC extensions on this contract.
- All operational extensions on this contract.
- LCA extensions on this contract.
What Does NOT Count
- Extensions on prior enlistment contracts (each contract has its own cap).
- New reenlistment contract obligations.
- Active duty service obligations from training or programs.
If you approach the 47-month cap, your Career Counselor will advise on reenlistment as the next step.
The Submission Process
Extension submission follows the same general flow as reenlistment, with some streamlined elements.
Step 1. Discuss With Career Counselor
Career Counselor reviews your situation and recommends the right tool (extension vs reenlistment). They confirm.
- Type of extension that fits your need
- Length needed and approval authority required
- Eligibility (no derogatory information, current PFT/CFT, etc.)
- Impact on bonuses, benefits, and future planning
- Documentation required
Step 2. Complete NAVMC 11537 RELM
The Reenlistment, Extension, Lateral Move (RELM) Worksheet is the standard form for extensions.
- Marine identifying information
- Current contract information
- Extension type and length requested
- Justification (operational need, personal need, etc.)
- Career Counselor section
- Command endorsement section
Step 3. Command Endorsement
Your commanding officer reviews and endorses (or non-endorses) the extension.
- Command considers operational impact
- Command considers Marine's record (PFT, CFT, conduct, proficiency)
- Command may recommend approval, disapproval, or modification
Step 4. Approval And Execution
Approval authority depends on extension length and type.
- LCA extensions. Local commander approves.
- Beyond LCA. HQMC approval through chain of command.
- Once approved, contract is updated in MCTFS and Marine Online.
The Career Counselor's Role
The Career Counselor is your primary point of contact for extensions, just as for reenlistment. The Career Counselor.
- Confirms eligibility for extension
- Explains type options and tradeoffs
- Walks you through extension vs reenlistment decision
- Prepares NAVMC 11537NAVMC 11537 RELM
- Tracks your case through approval
- Updates your records upon approval
For extension cases, contact your unit Career Counselor early. Some extension types require lead time for higher authority approval.
Bonus Implications
Extensions do NOT pay a reenlistment bonus. This is a key distinction from reenlistment.
Why Extensions Do Not Pay
- Extensions are short-term contract adjustments, not new obligations.
- The Selective Retention Bonus (SRB) per MCO 7220.24PMCO 7220.24P pays only on new reenlistment contracts.
- Extension months count toward time in service but not toward bonus eligibility.
When Extension Followed By Reenlistment Affects Bonus
If you extend and then reenlist, your zone calculation uses ACTIVE SERVICE COMPLETED at the time of reenlistment, not at the time of extension. Your Career Counselor confirms.
- Current zone (A through F)
- Bonus tier per FY MARADMIN
- Kicker eligibility (Long Tour, OUTCONUS, LCA, LM, etc.)
If you are close to a zone boundary, extension timing may affect your bonus. Career Counselor walks through the math.
Common Extension Scenarios
Scenario 1. PCS Alignment
You are due to PCS but your spouse needs to finish school. You extend 6 months to align departure date.
- Type. Personal Convenience.
- Length. 6 months.
- Authority. LCA (under 11 months).
- Bonus impact. None (no extension pays a bonus).
Scenario 2. School Pipeline
You are scheduled for a school but your EAS hits before the course ends. Command extends you to complete training.
- Type. Convenience of Government.
- Length. Aligned to course completion plus operational obligation.
- Authority. LCA or HQMC depending on length.
- Bonus impact. None.
Scenario 3. Deployment Completion
Your unit deploys and you are 4 months from EAS at unit return. Command extends to keep you with the unit through deployment.
- Type. Operational.
- Length. Aligned to deployment cycle plus stabilization.
- Authority. Higher headquarters typically.
- Bonus impact. None.
Scenario 4. Reenlistment Decision Bridge
You are weighing reenlistment but want time to consider. You extend 12 months to make a more informed decision.
- Type. Personal Convenience.
- Length. 12 months.
- Authority. HQMC (over 11 months).
- Bonus impact. None on extension. Future reenlistment bonus uses zone at time of reenlistment.
When Extension Is the Right Tool
Extension fits these patterns.
- Specific, short-term need (under 47 months)
- Operational or training alignment
- Family or education timing
- Bridge to reenlistment decision
- Avoiding contract obligation when situation is fluid
When Reenlistment Is Better
Reenlistment fits these patterns.
- Long-term commitment (4 to 6 years or more)
- Bonus eligibility in your MOS
- Career path advancement (B-Billet, school seat, EDSI, DSI)
- Approaching 47-month extension cap
- Ready for next contract obligation
Career Counselor walks through the tradeoffs.
