Reserve Obligation Overview

Every reservist enters service with a Military Service Obligation (MSO) typically 8 years. The MSO commits the member to a combination of active and reserve service. Understanding the MSO drives accession contracts, transfers, and separation processing.

Lateral Move and Career Progression MOS Program

The Lateral Move and Career Progression MOS Program lets Marines change their primary MOS to support force structure needs. Reserve component members may lateral move under specific conditions affecting drilling requirements and unit assignment.

Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS)

NAPS provides academic preparation for Marines selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Reserve and Active Component candidates may attend NAPS as preparation for Naval Academy commission. Specific procedures for Reserve member nomination and processing.

Non-Prior Service (NPS) Enlisted Accessions

Non-Prior Service Marines enter the Reserve through standard enlistment with no previous military service. They complete recruit training, MOS school, and join SMCR units to fulfill their Military Service Obligation.

Prior Service (PS) Enlisted Accessions

Prior Service Marines enter the Reserve having previously served on active duty. PS accessions bring trained, experienced Marines to SMCR units. Specific eligibility, MOS verification, and contract structures differ from NPS.

Prior Service (PS) Officer Accessions

PS Officer accessions bring previously commissioned officers from active duty or other Services to the Reserve. Direct Commission programs and Inter-Service Transfer procedures coordinate these accessions.

Reserve Incentive Programs (SRIP, ROEP, IIADT)

Reserve incentive programs reward enlistment, reenlistment, and continued service. SRIP defines bonuses for critical MOSs. ROEP supports specific reserve enlistment. IIADT structures initial active duty for training.

Reserve Officer Commissioning Program (ROCP)

ROCP commissions officers for the Marine Corps Reserve through specific programs. Members complete Officer Candidate School (OCS) and serve as Reserve officers in SMCR units. Different from active duty commissioning paths.

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) and Platoon Leaders Class (PLC)

SMP allows Reserve enlisted Marines to participate in college ROTC programs while maintaining SMCR drilling. PLC trains college students for Marine officer commission. Both programs commission new Reserve officers.
