Role and responsibility
The S-1 clerk receives the inbound Marine at the S-1 and issues the unit check-in sheet per MCO 1300.8MCO 1300.8. Each staff section signs off completion of section-specific actions (S-2 security clearance, S-3 training records, S-4 gear and clothing, Medical health record, Legal awareness, Career Planner counseling, Chaplain optional). The S-1 chief reviews the completed check-in sheet. The S-1 officer signs by direction on completion routing. The unit commander or designated representative meets the inbound Marine.
Source documents flow from the inbound Marine's arrival, the gain notification, the check-in sheet template, the orders package, and the prior unit clearance records. Unit check-in outputs include the issued check-in sheet, the completed staff section sign-offs, the S-4 gear and clothing accountability record, the Medical record routing, the S-1 initial brief record, the chain of command introduction, and the filed check-in sheet in the unit file.
Per MCO 1300.8, unit check-in runs through the unit S-1 and staff sections. The check-in process supports unit accountability and operational readiness for the inbound Marine.

Decision points
- Check-in cadence. Standard check-in runs within 5 working days of arrival. Operational tempo adjusts the cadence.
- Staff section sequencing. The unit routes the Marine through sections in parallel or sequential order based on staff availability.
- Chaplain optional versus required. Unit policy drives the requirement.
- Medical routing. The Medical sign-off includes garrison physical, sea-duty physical, or deployment physical depending on the assignment.
