Promotion Board Preparation Coaching
NCOs and SNCOs prepare their Marines for promotion boards by verifying records, optimizing composite scores, ensuring training completion, and coaching board appearance. Strong board prep produces strong promotion outcomes.
Leader Steps
- Identify Marines approaching promotion eligibility
- Audit eligibility roster
- Address composite score factors
- Coach Marine on board preparation
- Coordinate any required training
- Track promotion outcome
Why Board Prep Matters
Promotion to E-6 (Staff Sergeant) and above requires HQMC selection board. Per MCO P1400.32MCO P1400.32 Volume 2, the board reviews each candidate's record. Strong preparation produces stronger outcomes. Weak preparation costs Marines opportunities.
For E-2 through E-5, promotion is via composite score cutting score. Your prep here is just as important.
