GenAI.mil is the Marine Corps ENTERPRISE generative AI platform (per MARADMIN 018/26). It is the default for general-purpose GenAI use. HOWEVER, other approved GenAI systems exist and continue to be authorized for their intended and approved purpose. Per MARADMIN 018/26 paragraph 4.c. The MARADMIN does NOT STRICTLY LIMIT the use of other GenAI platforms and systems by Marines. GenAI systems that MEET THE REQUIREMENTS for use on government systems continue to be authorized. CAMOGPT is one example. Other tools exist. NIPRGPT is in the process of SUNSETTING and will no longer be available. Coordination with DC I required for new tool deployment. Per MARADMIN 018/26.

The MARADMIN 018/26 Framework

MARADMIN 018/26 designates GenAI.mil as the Marine Corps enterprise generative AI platform. The Marine Corps consolidates duplicative, general-purpose GenAI usage onto GenAI.mil.

However, Other Tools Are Permitted

Per MARADMIN 018/26 paragraph 4.c. The MARADMIN does NOT strictly limit the use of other GenAI platforms and systems by Marines. GenAI systems (such as CamoGPT and others) that meet the requirements for use on government systems continue to be authorized for their INTENDED and APPROVED PURPOSE.

The Spirit of the Policy

• General-purpose, duplicative GenAI usage. CONSOLIDATE onto GenAI.mil.
• Specialized AI tools with approved purpose. CONTINUE to use.
• New separate GenAI capabilities. REQUIRE DC I coordination and approval.

What CamoGPT Is

CamoGPT is a Marine Corps GenAI tool that has been authorized for use. It is one of the AI tools that meets government system requirements and remains authorized after the GenAI.mil consolidation under MARADMIN 018/26.

Where CamoGPT Fits

CamoGPT is a Marine Corps tool that pre-existed the enterprise GenAI.mil platform. Per MARADMIN 018/26, CamoGPT continues to be authorized for its intended and approved purpose.

How CamoGPT Differs From GenAI.mil

• GenAI.mil is the DEPARTMENT-WIDE enterprise platform.
• CamoGPT is a MARINE CORPS-SPECIFIC tool.
• Both are authorized.
• GenAI.mil is the default for general-purpose GenAI work.
• CamoGPT remains available for its approved use cases.

The "Meets Government System Requirements" Test

For an AI tool to be authorized, it must meet the requirements for use on government systems. These requirements include.

Security

• DoD-approved security posture.
• Authority to Operate (ATO) where applicable.
• Adherence to DoD cybersecurity standards.

Data Handling

• Clearly defined data classifications it can handle.
• Compliance with PII, PHI, and classification rules.
• Audit trail capabilities.

Operational Approval

• Approved by an appropriate authority (varies by tool).
• Documented intended use case.

Interoperability

• Works with government-furnished equipment.
• Compatible with enterprise networks where applicable.

NIPRGPT Sunsetting

Per MARADMIN 018/26 paragraph 4.b. NIPRGPT is in the process of sunsetting as a platform and will no longer be available for use.

Why

NIPRGPT was an earlier GenAI tool that has been consolidated under the enterprise GenAI.mil platform per the DoD strategy.

What to Do

If you were a NIPRGPT user, transition your work to GenAI.mil at https://genai.mil. The capabilities largely overlap and GenAI.mil is the supported enterprise platform.

Coordination With DC I for New Tools

Per MARADMIN 018/26 paragraph 4.a. Any command or organization seeking to develop, procure, or field a separate GenAI capability MUST coordinate with and receive approval from DC I PRIOR to initiation.

What Triggers Coordination

• Procuring a new commercial AI tool.
• Developing an internal AI capability.
• Deploying an AI agent for command tasks.
• Integrating AI into a command system.

What Does Not Trigger Coordination

• Using GenAI.mil (already approved).
• Using CamoGPT within its approved purpose.
• Using other previously authorized tools within their approved purpose.
• Personal use of commercial AI for non-Marine Corps purposes.

How to Evaluate Whether a Tool Is Authorized

Step 1. Identify the Tool

• Vendor or originating organization.
• Tool name and version.
• Capability scope.

Step 2. Check Authorization Status

• Does it have an ATO?
• Is it part of a DoD enterprise platform?
• Has DC I or another approval authority authorized it?

Step 3. Check Intended Use Match

• Does your intended use align with the tool's approved purpose?
• Are you handling data appropriate to the tool's authorized classification?

Step 4. When In Doubt

Engage DC I SDO for guidance. The AI Lead and Service Data Officer can confirm authorization status.

Common AI Tool Questions

Can I Use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Other Commercial AI

Commercial AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.) are NOT AUTHORIZED for processing CUI or any official Marine Corps work. Use them only for personal matters on personal devices.

Can I Use Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot embedded in DoD-approved Microsoft 365 environments may be authorized for specific purposes. Confirm with your command's IT and DC I before using for official work.

Can I Use AI Plugins or Browser Extensions

AI plugins and browser extensions on government devices require approval. Confirm with command IT before installation.

Can I Use AI on My Personal Phone for Work Email

No. Government work, including reading or drafting work emails, should use government-furnished equipment.

Can I Use GenAI.mil and CamoGPT Together

Yes, both are authorized. Use GenAI.mil for general-purpose GenAI work. Use CamoGPT within its specific approved purpose.

Can I Develop a Local AI Model for Command Use

Developing a local AI model is creating a "separate GenAI capability" and requires DC I coordination and approval per MARADMIN 018/26 paragraph 4.a.

Common Errors

Using Unauthorized Commercial AI for Official Work

Marines paste CUI into commercial AI for convenience. This is a security violation.

Mitigation. Use only DoD-authorized tools for official work.

Assuming All Marine Corps AI Tools Are Equivalent

Marines treat different tools as interchangeable without confirming approved use cases.

Mitigation. Confirm each tool's approved purpose. Use the right tool for the right job.

Procuring AI Without DC I Approval

Command procures AI tool without coordinating with DC I, creating unauthorized deployment.

Mitigation. Always engage DC I before procurement.

Continuing NIPRGPT Reliance

Users continue trying to access NIPRGPT after sunsetting.

Mitigation. Transition to GenAI.mil now. https://genai.mil.

Confusing Authorization With Convenience

Marines authorize themselves to use a tool because it is convenient, without proper approval.

Mitigation. Authorization is granted by approval authorities, not self-declared. Confirm before use.
