Career
Transition Timeline at 24, 12, 6 Months
EAS approaches over years, not months. The 24, 12, and 6-month touchpoints structure the leader's conversations alongside the formal TRP at 365 days. A Marine PCSing out unprepared is a leader's failure.
Leader Steps
- Identify EAS or retirement date for each Marine
- Open the transition conversation at 24 months out
- Coordinate TRP attendance at 12 months
- Support TRP completion and credential planning at 6 months
- Verify DD-214 components clean before sign-out
The 24-Month Mark
At 24 months from EAS or retirement.
- Open the transition conversation.
- Surface intent. Reenlist, separate, retire.
- If separating or retiring, brief the timeline ahead.
- Begin planning education and credential pursuit using time still available.
- Coordinate with the career planner if reenlistment is on the table.
A Marine 24 months out who has never had a transition conversation has lost half the runway.
The 12-Month Mark
Pre-Separation Counseling per the VOW Act starts at 365 days from EAS. VOW Act
- Verify the Marine schedules the Pre-Separation Counseling.
- Coordinate TRP enrollment.
- Coordinate any pre-EAS leave (terminal, transition).
- Brief the Marine on the medical, dental, and records audit cadence ahead.
Many Marines are surprised at the 12-month mark by the volume of work needed before EAS. Brief early.
The 6-Month Mark
At 6 months from EAS.
- TRP completion verified.
- Credential plan documented.
- Final medical and dental exams scheduled.
- Records audit running.
- Terminal leave planned.
- Family preparing for the transition.
A Marine 6 months out without these in motion is behind schedule.
TRP Coordination
Transition Readiness Program is mandatory per VOW Act and DoDI 1322.29DoDI 1322.29.
- Verify TRP enrollment date.
- Verify TRP completion.
- Brief the Marine on the value beyond the requirement.
- Coordinate with TRP staff for any specific Marine needs.
TRP covers VA benefits, employment workshop, financial planning, and pathway-specific tracks (employment, education, entrepreneurship, vocational training).
Records Audit Before EAS
The records cleanup at the records-cleanup leaf applies in particular to Marines transitioning.
- All FitReps current.
- All awards entered.
- DD-214 components reviewed.
- Discharge characterization confirmed.
- Any pending administrative actions resolved.
A Marine who EASes with records gaps fights those gaps post-service for years.
Terminal Leave Coordination
Terminal leave allows the Marine to start the next chapter while still on active duty pay.
- Calculate available leave balance.
- Schedule terminal leave dates.
- Submit the leave request.
- Coordinate sign-out with terminal leave aligned.
Brief the Marine on the practical mechanics. Some Marines mismanage terminal leave and either lose pay or miss the start of civilian employment.
Family Transition
Family carries the transition with the Marine.
- Coordinate with Family Readiness on transition resources.
- Brief on healthcare transition (TRICARE to civilian).
- Brief on housing transition.
- Brief on the dependent ID and DEERS transition.
Family considerations often drive the transition timing more than the Marine's preference.
Retirement-Specific Touchpoints
Marines retiring carry additional steps.
- Retirement physical at 6 to 12 months.
- VA disability claim at 6 months (BDD program).
- Retired pay election (REDUX, BRS continuation pay return).
- Survivor Benefit Plan election.
- Retirement ceremony coordination.
Each touchpoint has its own window. Coordinate with the career planner and retiree services.
Common Transition Timeline Failures
- 24-month conversation never happened.
- TRP enrollment deferred until 90 days from EAS.
- Records audit run too late, gaps persist.
- Terminal leave mismanaged, civilian employment delayed.
- Family transition planning skipped.
Where to Go Next
- Education planning for the TA and GI Bill use during the runway.
- Civilian credential matching for the post-service preparation.
- Records cadence and pre-board audit for the parallel records work.
