DIRECT AFFILIATION PROGRAM (DAP) is the Active-to-Reserve transition tool that affiliates departing active duty Marines DIRECTLY with a Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) unit. Year-round submission window. Submit NET 365 days prior to EAS, NLT 90 days prior to EAS. Affiliation Bonus per MARADMIN 023/26MARADMIN 023/26 pays $20,000 to $50,000 depending on rank, MOS, and obligation period for eligible MOSs. SMCR unit billet must be available within commuting distance or relocation plan. Career Counselor on the active side coordinates with Reserve Affiliation Counselor (RAC) on the Reserve side. What DAP Is

DAP is the streamlined path for active duty Marines who plan to leave active service and want to continue serving in the Marine Corps Reserve. It transitions you DIRECTLY to a Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) unit billet without a break in service.

DAP vs Other Transition Paths

Three patterns exist for active-to-Reserve transition. DAP is the most streamlined.

• DAP. Direct affiliation to SMCR unit. No break in service. Bonus eligible. Year-round submission.
• IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) and standard transition. Marine separates and joins Reserve later. Break in service. No DAP bonus.
• Civilian then Reserve. Full separation. Marine reaffiliates later through prior service Reserve recruiter.

DAP is the cleanest path for Marines who know they want to continue in the Reserve.

Who Is DAP Eligible

Basic Eligibility

• Active duty Marine within the submission window (NET 365 days, NLT 90 days from EAS)
• No derogatory information that would disqualify Reserve service
• Current PFT and CFT (passing)
• MOS qualified for the SMCR unit billet OR willing to lateral move
• Recommended by chain of command
• Medically and administratively cleared

Bonus Eligibility

The Affiliation Bonus per MARADMIN 023/26MARADMIN 023/26 requires.

• MOS on the eligible MOS list (varies by FY)
• Available SMCR unit billet matching the MOS
• Obligation period commitment (typically 3 or 6 years in SMCR)
• Rank on the eligible rank list

The Submission Window

DAP submission is YEAR-ROUND. This is different from FTAP and STAP, which have specific FY windows.

Submission Timing

• NET (No Earlier Than). 365 days prior to EAS.
• NLT (No Later Than). 90 days prior to EAS.
• Recommended. 6 to 9 months prior to EAS for best billet matching.

Earlier submission gives more billet options. Later submission risks missing preferred billet.

• Billet matching takes time. SMCR units have specific MOS and rank requirements.
• Bonus contract execution requires lead time.

The Affiliation Bonus

Per MARADMIN 023/26MARADMIN 023/26 (Reserve Affiliation Bonus Program), eligible MOSs receive an Affiliation Bonus.

The bonus carries a service obligation in the SMCR.

• Mobilization availability
• Bonus recoupment if obligation not met

SMCR Unit Billet Matching

Affiliation requires an AVAILABLE billet at an SMCR unit. The match depends on.

• Commuting distance from your home of record or future residence
• Relocation willingness
• Major SMCR concentrations (Reserve sites across CONUS)

MOS Match

• Direct MOS match preferred
• Lateral move possible if MOS unavailable but you qualify for another MOS the unit needs
• LATMOV bonus may apply per current MARADMIN

Rank Match

• Billet authorized rank must align with your current rank
• Some flexibility for senior or junior fits depending on unit needs

The Career Counselor And RAC Partnership

The Active-Side Career Counselor

Your unit Career Counselor handles.

The Reserve Affiliation Counselor (RAC)

How They Work Together

• Career Counselor refers you to the RAC after initial eligibility screening

The Submission Process

Step 1. Initial Discussion With Career Counselor

12 to 18 months from EAS, raise DAP intent with your Career Counselor. Career Counselor.

What Changes

• You hold civilian employment as your primary occupation
• You drill one weekend per month and two weeks per year (typical)

Mobilization

Can I DAP With Any MOS

Eligibility depends on SMCR billet availability and current bonus MOS list. If your active MOS is not on the bonus list, DAP without bonus is still possible if a billet is available.

Can I DAP To Any Location

Geographic options depend on SMCR unit locations. Major concentrations exist in CONUS. RAC presents options based on your preferences.

Can I DAP And Then Go Back To Active Duty

Active component recall from Reserve is possible through specific programs but is not guaranteed. Treat DAP as a Reserve commitment.

Does DAP Affect My GI Bill

Drilling Reservists retain GI Bill eligibility. Use of benefits during Reserve service follows current VA guidance.

What If I Cannot Find A Matching Billet

If no matching billet exists in your preferred area, options include.

• Wait for billet availability (year-round window helps)
