Retirements
Reserve Retirements - Eligibility, Age, and Pay
Reserve retirement requires 20 qualifying years and pay begins at age 60 (with reductions for qualifying active duty). Satisfactory year criteria, retirement age reduction, and the Career Retirement Credit Report drive eligibility.

Reserve vs Active Duty Retirement
Per MCRAMM Chapter 4 Section 7 and 10 USC 1273110 USC 12731, reserve retirement differs significantly from active duty retirement.
- Active duty: 20 years of service, retirement pay begins immediately at separation
- Reserve: 20 qualifying years of service, retirement pay begins at age 60 (with reductions possible)
I&I admin tracks members across decades of reserve service to ensure retirement eligibility is correctly documented.
What Counts as a Qualifying Year
Per 10 USC 1273210 USC 12732, a qualifying year for reserve retirement requires.
- 50 retirement points minimum during the anniversary year
- Service in the Ready Reserve, Standby Reserve, or other qualifying reserve component
- Continuous reserve service or active duty service
A year with fewer than 50 points does not count toward the 20-year requirement. The point system page covers point sources.
The 20-Year Requirement
Per 10 USC 1273110 USC 12731, eligibility for reserve retirement requires.
- 20 qualifying years of service total (combining active and reserve)
- The most recent 8 years served in a reserve component (or active duty if applicable)
- Application for retirement at age 60 (with possible reductions)
The 20 years are calendar years where the member earned at least 50 points each. Members retire from the active drilling force after 20 years and become Reserve Retired Awaiting Pay until age 60.
Retirement Age Reduction
Per recent statutory changes, retirement pay age might be reduced based on qualifying active duty service performed after a specific date (currently 28 January 2008).
- Each 90 cumulative days of qualifying active duty service in a fiscal year reduces the retirement pay age by 90 days
- Maximum reduction varies by statute (commonly down to age 50)
- Qualifying active duty includes mobilization, ADOS for specific operations, and other qualifying service
This reduction is significant for members with deployment history. Track qualifying active duty days carefully.
Two Retirement Status Categories
Reserve Retired Awaiting Pay
Member has 20 qualifying years but is not yet age 60 (or reduced age).

- TRICARE Retired Reserve available
- Subject to recall under specific conditions
- Retains military identification and base privileges (limited)
Reserve Retired Receiving Pay

Retirement Pay Calculation
Per DOD FMR Volume 7BDOD FMR Volume 7B, reserve retirement pay calculates as follows.
- Total retirement points / 360 = equivalent years of service
- Equivalent years x 2.5% = retirement multiplier (capped at 75%)
- Multiplier x retired pay base = monthly retirement pay
Example: A reservist with 2400 total points calculates 6.67 equivalent years of service. Multiplier of 16.67%. Multiplied by retired pay base for the highest 36 months of basic pay.
A reservist with 4500 points (extensive mobilization) calculates 12.5 equivalent years. Multiplier of 31.25%. Significantly higher pay.
Career Retirement Credit Report (CRCR)
The CRCR is the official record of reserve service points.
- Generated annually after each anniversary year
- Validated by the member each year
- Final document for retirement application
- Discrepancies must resolve while documentation exists
- Lost CRCR data is difficult to reconstruct
I&I admin processes annual CRCR submissions per 0111-PERA-2012 (Validate CRCR submissions).
Performance Steps for Retirement Processing
Step 1 - Track Member Eligibility
For members approaching 20 qualifying years.
- Pull annual CRCR for each member
- Verify each year totals 50+ points
- Flag any year falling below threshold for review
- Track total qualifying years count
Step 2 - Process Annual CRCR
After each anniversary year ends.
- Pull member point total from MCTFS
- Generate CRCR per member
- Member reviews and signs
- Submit to HQMC RA for validation
- File copy in OMPF and member's records
Step 3 - Process Retirement Application
For members applying for retirement.
- Verify 20 qualifying years documented
- Calculate retirement pay age based on qualifying active duty
- Generate retirement application package
- Route through MARFORRES to HQMC
Step 4 - Process Transfer to Retired Reserve
After application approved.
- UD/MIPS transaction shifting member to Retired Reserve pay group
- Member loses drill obligation
- Member retains identification and limited privileges
- DFAS notification for retirement pay processing (if age 60+)
Common Retirement Errors
These hit on retirement processing.
- CRCR not annually validated. Years pass and member finds discrepancies near retirement. Fix by validating each year promptly.
- Membership points not posted. IRR or Standby years not earning the 15 membership points. Pull MCTFS to verify and submit corrections.
- Active duty days not credited. Mobilization or AT periods not posting active duty points. Submit retroactive UD/MIPS.
- Retirement age miscalculated. Qualifying active duty days for age reduction not properly tracked. Pull mobilization records and recalculate.
- Application missing documentation. Retirement application missing CRCR, NAVMC 11000NAVMC 11000, or other required documents. Verify before submission.
Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP)
Members eligible for retirement might elect SBP coverage at retirement.
- Spousal coverage and child coverage options
- Premium deducted from retirement pay
- One-time election at retirement (with limited later changes)
- Coordinate election with member during retirement processing
Coordination Touchpoints
Retirement processing touches multiple organizations.
- HQMC RA: Reserve retirement policy and application processing
- DFAS: Retirement pay calculation and disbursement
- MARFORRES G-1: Reserve retirement coordination
- TRICARE: Health coverage transition at retirement
