BAH Overview - Basic Allowance for Housing
Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is monthly cash payment offsetting the cost of housing for Marines not residing in government quarters. Rate depends on rank, dependent status, and zip code. Drives one of the largest pay categories with significant audit risk.
BAH During PCS and TDY
BAH coordinates with PCS and TDY orders to maintain continuous coverage and correct rate. Specific rules for primary BAH location, secondary location, and partial month BAH during transitions.
BAH Special Categories
Specific BAH categories cover Marines outside the standard with-dependents and without-dependents framework. Overseas housing allowance (OHA), partial BAH, and other special categories address unique housing situations.
BAH With Dependents
BAH with dependents rate applies when a Marine has qualifying dependents at the duty station. The rate is higher than without-dependents BAH and reflects family housing costs. Dependent eligibility per MCO 1751.3 drives entitlement.
BAH Without Dependents and BAH-Diff
BAH without dependents applies to single Marines and Marines without qualifying dependents at the duty station. BAH-Differential covers specific cases where Marines have dependents at a separate location.
