What MGIB-SR Is

The Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR), also known as Chapter 1606, is the education benefit for drilling Selected Reserve members. Per 10 USC Chapter 1606, eligible reservists receive monthly payments while pursuing approved education programs.

Eligibility

A reservist qualifies for MGIB-SR when meeting all of these.

• Six-year reserve service obligation (initial enlistment or reenlistment)

• Maintained satisfactory participation throughout obligation
• Not eligible for higher GI Bill benefits (member chooses one program)

The 6-year contract is the foundation. Without the 6-year SELRES (Selected Reserve, what most Marines call SMCR or the Reserves) commitment, the member does not qualify for MGIB-SR.

Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
