Tuition Assistance (TA) for Reservists

What Tuition Assistance Is

Per MCO 1560.25MCO 1560.25 and DoDI 1322.25DoDI 1322.25, the Marine Corps Tuition Assistance (TA) Program pays up to $4500 per fiscal year for active duty Marines pursuing approved college courses. Reservists qualify when serving on qualifying active duty orders.

This is a current-service benefit. Members use TA while serving rather than earning it for later use. Drilling SELRES (Selected Reserve, what most Marines call SMCR or the Reserves) members qualify only while on those orders.

Eligibility for Reservists

A reservist qualifies for TA when meeting all of these.

• Currently serving on active duty orders for over 30 consecutive days
• Member is in good standing
• Course is at an approved institution
• Course is part of an approved degree or credential program
• Member has not exceeded annual TA cap
• Member meets first-term active duty qualifications (newly enlisted Marines have specific waiting periods)

Reservists drilling without active duty orders generally do not qualify for TA. They might use MGIB-SR or Post-9/11 GI Bill instead.

Benefit Limits

Annual Cap

• Up to $4500 per fiscal year per Marine
• Capped at $250 per semester credit hour
• Capped at $166 per quarter credit hour

Lifetime Cap

• 130 semester credit hours
• 195 quarter credit hours

These limits keep TA focused on supporting active duty career development rather than complete degree funding.

Approved Programs

• Online programs from accredited institutions
• Foreign schools meeting specific accreditation

The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) maintains the list of approved institutions.

Program Requirements

• Course must contribute to an approved degree or credential program
• Member must declare a specific degree or credential
• Course must apply to program

Random elective courses outside the declared program do not qualify.

Performance Steps for I&I Admin

Step 1 - Verify Eligibility

When a reservist on active duty asks about TA.

• Verify current active duty orders (over 30 days continuous)
• Verify good standing
• Verify member has not exceeded annual or lifetime cap
• Verify school and program are approved

Step 2 - Counsel on Process

Brief the member on TA process.

• Application via MarineNet TA system
• Approval required before course start
• Member pays course costs upfront in some cases
• Reimbursement process if applicable
• Grade requirements (must complete with passing grade)

Step 3 - Direct to MarineNet TA

The member applies through MarineNet.

• Login to MarineNet
• Select Tuition Assistance module
• Submit application for the specific course
• Provide course details (school, course number, credit hours, dates)
• Wait for approval before course start

Step 4 - Monitor Course Completion

After course completion.

• Member submits grade to MarineNet TA
• Failing grade or course drop might require reimbursement
• Successful completion documented for lifetime cap tracking

Grade and Reimbursement Requirements

TA requires successful completion. Failure consequences.

• C grade or better for undergraduate: TA covers
• B grade or better for graduate: TA covers
• Course drop after add deadline: Member might owe reimbursement
• Failing grade: Member owes reimbursement
• Withdrawal mid-course: Member owes reimbursement

Reservists with multiple education benefits should know the difference.

Members on extended active duty often use TA for courses while serving and reserve GI Bill for after.

Common Member Questions

"I use TA and Post-9/11 together?"

Generally yes, if both apply. TA pays first, GI Bill might cover gap. Member should consult VA and MarineNet TA office.

"What if I drop a class?"

Drop after add deadline typically requires reimbursement. Drop within add window does not.

"What grade do I need?"

C for undergraduate, B for graduate. Lower grade requires reimbursement.

"I take online classes?"

Yes. Online courses at approved institutions qualify if part of approved program.

"What about books?"

TA does not pay for books. GI Bill includes book stipend.

"What if my deployment interrupts the class?"

Coordinate with school and MarineNet TA. Withdrawal due to military obligation might not require reimbursement.

Common I&I Errors on TA

1. Telling member without active duty orders they qualify. TA requires 30+ days continuous active duty. Drilling reservists do not qualify.
2. Wrong cap amount. Caps might change. Reference current MCO 1560.25MCO 1560.25 and program updates.
3. Not flagging the lifetime cap. Member with 130+ semester hours used does not use more TA.
4. Failing to advise on grade requirements. Member fails course and is surprised by reimbursement requirement.
5. Recommending TA when GI Bill is better choice. TA caps tuition. GI Bill plus housing allowance might be better total benefit. Counsel member on options.
