Quality of Life Benefits Overview

Per MCRAMM Chapter 12, reservists and their families have access to military quality of life benefits with eligibility based on component status. Drilling SELRES (Selected Reserve, what most Marines call SMCR or the Reserves) members hold the widest access.

These benefits provide cost savings and support family readiness.

Commissary Privileges

Commissaries offer groceries at lower prices than civilian stores.

Drilling SELRES Members and Families

• Full commissary access
• Use as often as desired
• Family members accompanied or with valid ID

IRR Members and Families

• Limited commissary access per current policy
• Specific use frequency might apply
• Verify current privileges before counseling members

Retired Reserve Members and Families

• Full commissary access for retirees drawing pay

Space-Available (Space-A) travel allows military members and families to fly on military aircraft for free or at minimal cost when seats are available.

• Drilling SELRES: Yes for specific categories per Air Mobility Command rules
• Retired Reserve receiving pay: Yes (Category VI or similar)
• Awaiting Pay Reserve: Limited
• IRR and Standby: Generally not eligible

How Space-A Works

• Member registers at military passenger terminal
• Categories prioritize boarding (combat zone, emergency leave, drilling, retired, etc.)
• Show up, sign up, and wait
• Travel where space available

Space-A is free or very low cost but unpredictable. Members budget time for delays.

Military Lodging

Military lodging on installations offers reduced rates compared to civilian hotels.

Eligibility

• Active duty traveling: Full eligibility
• Drilling reservists on AT or ADOS orders: Full eligibility
• Retired members: Full eligibility for most lodging
• Family members: With sponsoring member

Lodging Types

1. Outdated commissary policy cited. Recent expansions have changed access. Verify current policy.
2. Saying friends accompany. Only authorized ID holders access most facilities.
3. Wrong category for Space-A. Different components have different priority. Verify.
4. Family member access overstated. Some benefits require sponsoring member presence. Some allow standalone access. Verify.
5. Online shopping access not mentioned. Recent ShopMyExchange expansion is a benefit many do not know about.
