Reserve Medical Standards Overview

Reserve members must maintain specific medical standards for continued drilling and mobilization eligibility. Annual physicals, dental readiness, and specific medical category management drive reserve medical operations.

Medical Board Process - MEB and PEB

Members with permanent or potentially permanent medical conditions undergo the Disability Evaluation System (DES). The Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) reviews the condition. The Physical Evaluation Board (PEB) determines fitness for duty and disposition.

Medical Hold and Limited Duty (LIMDU)

Members with medical conditions affecting duty enter Medical Hold or Limited Duty (LIMDU). LIMDU restricts member from full duties pending recovery or evaluation. Medical Hold is for members on active duty pending disability disposition.

Periodic Health Assessment (PHA)

The PHA is the annual medical screening for all military members. Reserve members complete PHA annually to maintain readiness category. The PHA covers physical exam, mental health screening, dental, and specific deployment-related items.

Reserve Component Medical Care Eligibility

Reserve members access military medical care under specific conditions. Drilling members have limited access. Mobilized members access full active duty TRICARE. Members with LOD-positive injuries access care for those conditions. Specific eligibility per status drives access.

Reserve Dental Readiness

Dental status drives deployment eligibility. Reserve members must maintain Class 1 or Class 2 dental status for deployment. Class 3 conditions block deployment until treated. The Reserve Dental Care program supports member dental access.
